October 2010

2010 Fall Conference

Education is still the foundation from which great people and great ideas emerge.  The 2010 AdvancED Georgia SACS Fall Conference will assemble educators dedicated to strengthening and advancing education to help schools and districts improve for the benefit of their students.   AdvancED Georgia is committed to helping you achieve excellence in education, resulting in improved student achievement.  We have prepared this conference to provide quality professional development sessions designed to explore how accreditation and school improvement can increase your school’s or district’s effectiveness.  If you are new to accreditation or will be hosting a Quality Assurance Review, there are numerous sessions that will help you prepare and make the most of your accreditation.  Regardless of where you are in the process, this conference will provide you with the skills, strategies, and resources to develop and implement improvement initiatives successfully. Please join us there by clicking here to register or view additional details about the conference.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mike Bryans
Director, AdvancED Georgia

AdvancED Launches New Web Site
AdvancED has launched a new Web site – www.advanc-ed.org - with a fresh look and refined navigation!  We took your advice and made the Web site both user-friendly and more up-to-date.  We’ve included new sections on School Improvement and Issues in Education, and added more news items.  Check out AdvancED’s new Web site and find out how we are fostering new ideas and solutions, putting schools and districts first, advancing excellence, and transforming education.

Also, as part of the AdvancED Web site redesign, we have moved all Accreditation Resources and Tools to a single, convenient location.  These resources will only be available to institutions involved in AdvancED Accreditation.  Many of the tools and resources have been updated and new ones have been added.  Because these resources have been placed in a repository created only for schools and districts involved in the accreditation process, your principal, head of school, or superintendent will have details on locating these resources and tools.
AdvancED Georgia Announces Award Winner
AdvancED Georgia proudly announces Dr. Marlene Caplan as the recipient of the 2010 Excellence in Education Award.  Dr. Caplan graduated from Hunter College of the City University of New York and received her specialist and doctorate degrees form Georgia State University. She has taught for the New York City Schools, the DeKalb County Schools, and Oglethorpe University. She retired as Executive Director for Secondary Instruction from the DeKalb County Schools. Additionally, she has been employed at the Georgia Department of Education and served as the State Director for the Georgia Secondary and Middle Schools Committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Each year AdvancED selects award winners across the country for this honor. Two winners will then be chosen among those honorees to be formally recognized at the 2011 AdvancED International Summit in March. Dr. Caplan will be competing for this overall recognition. Congratulations.

Self-Assessment Resources Available

AdvancED has developed online resources to assist schools with completing the new Self-Assessment (SA) tool and Executive Institutional Summary (EIS).  Schools will have access to a two part instructional video composed of two elements:  Part A, focuses on “Collecting the Data” and Part B, is about “Entering the Information.”  Schools will find this learning resource very informative and easy to use.  Please contact our office to find how you can begin using theses resources today.
