Managing Artifacts-We're Here to Help!
A required component of the Quality Assurance Review (QAR) process is making artifacts (documents, assessment data, plans, policies, etc.) that support the school’s assessment of the indicators available to the external review team. It also is crucial that the school community provide samples and copies of the artifacts it references within the Self-Assessment, along with any other evidence, that demonstrates adherence to the standards.

This year, the AdvancED Illinois Office has implemented the practice of reviewing artifacts electronically. In order to help school communities organize and manage their electronic artifacts, our office has adopted the Artifact Management Tool (AMT). The tool and a supporting Help document are sent to the school leader via e-mail at the time the QAR visit is confirmed. The AMT must be completed and submitted to the QAR Team Chair no later than two weeks before the scheduled onsite visit.

Workshops have been scheduled in Oak Brook which will provide an overview of the tool. Participants also will be provided step-by-step instructions on how to:

  1. Save documents in PDF format.
  2. Create Goggle documents.
  3. Develop hyperlinks, and insert into the AMT to link artifacts.
  4. Secure artifacts to restrict public access to view documents.

ISBE Announces the 2011 Teacher of the Year

Join us as we offer our congratulations to Annice Brave who serves as the chair of the English Department at Alton High School. She was recognized as the 2011 Illinois Teacher of the Year. Ms. Brave teaches English and Journalism at the high school and has been a teacher for 23 years. She earned National Board certification in 2001.

Ms. Brave is the faculty sponsor of the student literacy magazine, Calliope. She has been instrumental in developing a media class that combines writing with technology and a student radio program in partnership with her local community college. She spends her lunch hour in her classroom so that students can work on the school newspaper.  She also is a past president of her local teachers union.

Alton High School has been accredited for over 100 years. It first achieved accreditation and its distinction of quality in 1906.

AdvancED Launches New Website

AdvancED has launched a new Web site – www.advanc-ed.org - with a fresh look and refined navigation!  We took your advice and made the Web site both user-friendly and more up-to-date.  We’ve included new sections on School Improvement and Issues in Education, and added more news items.  As part of the new site, our state has its own page which includes links to Professional Development, Quality Assurance Review Tools, and Resources for School Improvement. The AMT and instructions on how to complete it also are found on our web page.

Be sure to check the Professional Development page frequently because all workshop details and registration information will be listed there.  Also be sure to check out AdvancED’s new Web site and find out how we are fostering new ideas and solutions, putting schools and districts first, advancing excellence, and transforming education.
Accreditation Resources and Tools Access
As part of the AdvancED Web site redesign, we have moved all Accreditation Resources and Tools to a single, convenient location. These resources only will be available to institutions involved in AdvancED Accreditation. Many of the tools and resources have been updated and new ones have been added. These resources have been placed in a repository created only for schools and districts involved in the accreditation process and your building leader or superintendent will have details on locating these resources and tools. For assistance, please contact the state office 866.292.1781 or blueshor@uillinois.edu.
Demographic Update
It is once again that time of year to login to the AdvancED Web site and update the demographic information for your school or district.  To update your demographics, please go to www.advanc-ed.org. If you have not logged into the Web site before or if you need assistance, please contact our office.
