News from all over
Over the weekend, the Globe and Mail featured a review on a book which contrasts two web gurus and their thoughts around the impact of digital technologies on the way we think and behave. One of the gurus, Clay Shirky, advances an interesting theory that there is ‘a vast cognitive surplus drawn from a growing global community of Internet users whose enormous pool of free time and creative capacity can now be tapped in pursuit of virtually any shared goal or endeavour.’  Now, that’s an argument for collaborative learning!

The 2009 Valorizing Immigrants' Non-Canadian Work Experience report was brought to my attention again this week. This study explores how some employers, sector councils and immigrant settlement agencies assess and give value to, or valorize the prior foreign work experience of immigrants. We really do need to focus some attention on this issue as we pull out of recession and face the inevitable skill shortages. For more information, view both the full report and executive summary from the Canadian Council on Learning.

And finally, Dave Ferguson, who spoke to great acclaim at the Symposium last year, has generated some interest with his column on note-taking – how to hang onto what you are learning.

The Instructional Design Maturity Model Approach for Developing Online Courses
Authored by: Brad Loiselle PMP, President iPal Interactive Learning Inc,
Co-Authored by: Scott Hunter PMP, CMA, President Project Management Center

There have been a lot of changes in the way we learn since the days of Blooms’ Taxonomy, authored in the early 1950’s.  Many approaches have been founded upon this methodology and have incorporated new levels of learning techniques in order to ensure that the learning meets the requirements of the time. With today’s technology advancements and the movement towards on-line education, the way we construct courses must adapt to these changing needs. The IDMM provides a model that supports that process.

This document outlines the correlation between the various levels of development and the steps required within each level to develop a successful online course. Read More...

Words of Wisdom from CTDP and CTP Holders

Over the next few months, members holding the CTDP or CTP will be sharing words of wisdom and real-world experiences about their journey through certification. These certified members will address a series of questions around their journey to complete the program and the benefits to their careers once the designation was achieved.

Meet Manit Parmar, CTDP

Learning Consultant
ADP Canada

What prompted you to pursue certification with CSTD? As a training professional, it is important for my level of professionalism to be recognized. CSTD is an organization that is well known in the training industry. As a CSTD member, I have taken advantage of the platform provided for networking; as well I have pursued my CTDP to stand out in a crowd.

What was your greatest challenge in going through the certification process? My biggest challenge was getting back into study mode and then finding time to study. At first, it was very difficult to concentrate on the task at hand, but succeeding kept me motivated.

What has obtaining the CTDP or CTP done for you as a training and development professional?
Obtaining the designation has given me a higher-level of respect in the T&D industry, and has provided me with the credibility and opportunity to mentor other certification candidates going through the process. On the job front, I found that my resume started getting noticed far more.

What was the best resource you discovered or used to help you prepare for the knowledge exam? I would give the credit to my wife. She would randomly go through the books and quiz me. I think if you can find a support system in the shape of a partner or mentor, the journey becomes easier.

What advice would you give to certification candidates? I would say every concept that you encounter in your studies, relate it back to something in real life. Making these connections helped me in understanding the material.

A Message from CSTD’s New Certification Coordinator, Michelle Schnob:
“I am very excited to be a part of the CSTD team and the Certification program. I look forward to connecting with current and future candidates in my new role.  I am always available to answer any questions you may have as you go through the certification process. Please don’t hesitate to contact me via email at mschnob@cstd.ca.”

Learn @ Work Week - September 20-24th, 2010

Engage the Whole Organization!

Learn @ Work Week provides training and development professionals with the platform to celebrate what they do everyday. Engage your colleagues and employees through workplace learning events highlighting organizational learning opportunities, learning success stories and more.

Where to start? Here are some ideas to get you and your team going…

1. Establish a Learn @ Work Week Event Planning Committee
Bring together a group of workplace learning advocates to help cover all the details for your event.

2. Choose a Topic - Know Your Audience and Budget
Ideally, you will want to plan an event which appeals to all levels of your organization, which is no easy task. To do this, you should consider common workplace topics of general interest including internal learning opportunities, mental health, safety, literacy, diversity and more. You may find that having a few smaller events throughout the week on various topics accommodates more participants.
Your budget will dictate what and how much you can do during the week. If you have the budget, why not make you learning event into a ‘Lunch ‘n Learn’ or bring in a subject matter expert to speak to your topic?
Check out events across the nation to see how our members celebrated last year.

3. Finalize the Details
To ensure you have covered all the details, use our ‘Event Planning Checklist,’ found in the Learn @ Work Week toolkit.

4. Promote Your Event
Use social media, newsletters, intranet and more to promote your event. Put up Learn @ Work Week posters throughout your organization (for additional copies contact members@cstd.ca). Include the Learn @ Work Week logo on your communications.

5. Send Us Your Pictures and Event Information
We would love to feature photos and a blurb on your event in our eNewsletter and online to inspire other members. Send your information to members@cstd.ca

For more ideas, promotional materials and resources to get you started, visit the Learn @ Work Week on the web.

Learning Leader Nominations are in!
Thanks to everyone who nominated a Learning Leader this year! We had an unprecedented amount of entries and we’re very excited to honour executives who work outside of T&D and HR, but who support workplace learning. Look out for a full list of recipients in our Canadian Learning Journal, fall edition.
