The piracy menace off the Somalian coast has been growing since 1991 when the central authority in Mogadishu collapsed. Somali pirates are growing increasingly brazen, while piracy along the Straits of Malacca has waned since the 2004 tsunami. Speakers will discuss how the transportation community and local governments are cooperating to battle this transportation threat, and what tactics are successful.

Many Chinese manufacturers and fabricators of breakbulk commodities are new to the export business, often creating problems for forwarders and 3PLs who must educate them about overseas shipping concerns such as vessel schedules and accurate weights and measure. Steel exports encounter special problems because of confusing government descriptions of types of cargo subject to tariffs.
