Creative Applications of Research in the Clinical Massage Environment
New clinical techniques and approaches result from combining research findings with clinical experience. In this workshop Whitney will explore the most recent research behind our current understanding of stretching and myofascial physiology. Using concepts from these research findings, a unique treatment approach combining stretching and myofascial treatment techniques will be presented. We will measure its effectiveness and then discuss ways this treatment approach could be modified or enhanced with future investigations.

The Assessment of Upper limb Dysfunctions: Indications for Superficial or Deep Fascia Work

Recent studies are helping us to understand the differences between superficial and deep fascia. The specific anatomical and histological characteristics of these distinct layers can justify the degree to which they are implicated in particular dysfunctions. When assessing our clients we need to be able to recognize which types of manual approaches are more indicated. In this workshop, the specific structural differences between these two layers will be discussed and two different methods of treatment will be demonstrated in reference to upper limb dysfunctions, such as distal circulatory deficit and wrist flexor tendinitis.

Two reports from the Profession: Best Practices and the Body of Knowledge Project

Best Practices:
Attend this informative update on the progress of the Massage Therapy Foundation Best Practices Committee (BPC) toward developing a long overdue system for the development of best practices guidelines for the massage profession. Get the latest update hot off the press from the BPC symposium held just prior to this conference on the progress toward the development of best practices guidelines for a MT approach to low back pain and stress reduction. The BPC has been hard at work collecting data for the development of this process. Come hear what they've learned, what the next steps will be toward the development of Best Practices guidelines and how you can contribute to the process.

Massage Therapy Body of Knowledge (MTBOK) Launch
Come to this presentation of a year-long groundbreaking project to develop a Body of Knowledge for the massage therapy profession.  In this session you will get an overview of the MTBOK content and the process that was used by a task force composed of select volunteers from the field to produce a BOK by and for massage therapy.  Members of the task force and the MTBOK project manager will unveil the final product with an overview and discussion of key elements of the MTBOK.  You will also hear their thoughts on the lasting value of the MTBOK, its incorporation of research literacy and some possible future directions to pursue.

Knowledge Translation: Key Skills for Highly Successful Clinicians

Research is a fundamental pillar on which the future of our profession will be built. We also are living in an age of unprecedented information access and it is easy to feel overwhelmed by it all. A key factor for our growth is knowledge translation: the ability to transfer what is learned in the research environment directly into useful clinical practice. In this presentation Whitney explores many facets of the knowledge translation process and what skills can help massage practitioners make effective use of the ever-expanding research resources.
